Holland ISD 1st Quarterly Newsletter

Hornet families,

Welcome to the 1st Quarterly Holland ISD Newsletter of the 2026-2027 school year! We're excited to share the latest happenings and updates from our school community to keep you informed!

A MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT

As we wrap up the first nine weeks of the 2026–27 school year, I want to take a moment to celebrate the great start to our year! It has been exciting to see our students settling into routines, building relationships, embracing new challenges, and making progress both in and out of the classroom.

As a district, we remain focused on academic excellence, safe learning environments, timely communication, and strong parental involvement. These priorities guide the work we do each day and help ensure that every student has the support and opportunities they need to succeed.

Thank you to our parents and families for your continued partnership. Your support at home, involvement in school activities, and communication with our staff make a tremendous difference in the success of our students. Our teachers and staff continue to focus on knowing each student, supporting their growth, and creating opportunities for them to reach their full potential.

As we begin the next nine weeks, let’s continue working together to support the growth of each individual student and help them reach their fullest potential in all that they do.

Superintendent, Jennisty Thomason

HIGH SCHOOL UPDATE

We are now 33 days into the school year and lots of things are ramped up in full swing.  We now have only two weeks left in the first quarter grading cycle so it is imperative for students to pay close attention to the grades in the grade book and those that may be missing and those that need to be redone (poor tests for instance).  Student organizations are ramping up with FFA Meetings and Events, FCCLA Meetings, Band Contests and Performances,  UIL Academic Practices, Football, Volleyball and Cross Country.

MIDDLE SCHOOL UPDATE

We are off to a great start to the school year. Football, cheerleading, volleyball, and cross country have all begun, and UIL tryouts are in full swing. We have lots of students showing their school spirit and getting involved in many activities. We have also launched our new communication program, ParentSquare, and we hope you’re enjoying it and finding it easy to access and use. Our students and teachers have been working hard, and it’s been great to see so much learning, energy, and excitement happening around campus. We’re looking forward to a fantastic year together! Always remember to call or email if you have any questions or concerns. We are happy to help.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL UPDATE

It’s hard to believe we have already completed the first nine weeks of the 2026–2027 school year! Our students have worked hard to learn routines, build strong habits, and push themselves to grow both academically and behaviorally. We are so proud of the progress our Hornets are making! A heartfelt thank you to our staff, students, and families for working together to make this such a great start to the year. We truly believe that WE are better together! During these first nine weeks, we have welcomed guest readers, prepared for UIL events, cheered on our Hornets at pep rallies, run the football field with Swarm, and most importantly, spent each day learning, growing, and becoming the best Hornets we can be.

We are also excited to have partnered with Holland High School to welcome student interns to our campus. These students are working alongside our teachers to provide additional support and encouragement to our elementary students, a wonderful opportunity for our younger and older Hornets to learn from one another! I am excited to see what the rest of the year holds and look forward to watching our students continue to learn, grow, and thrive!

ATHLETICS UPDATE

FOOTBALL

The Holland Hornets are off to a competitive start to the season. At the High School we have 49 players competing on our Varsity and JV teams. At the Middle School we have 34 competing between the 7th and 8th grade.

Varsity football hit the ground running with a competitive non-district schedule. We have battled and shown improvement each week. Through five games, the Hornets are scoring 14 more points per game and allowing 13 fewer points per game compared to last season—a phenomenal testament to the growth and relentless effort of our players and coaches. The Varsity picked up a win vs Austin Veritas 42-21 and a solid district win over Snook 37-8. The Varsity is currently 2-3 overall and 1-1 in district. The Hornets will be on the road this Friday night at Somerville. Come out to support your Hornets, band and cheer!

JV football is off to a solid start to the season and have battled hard to earn two wins vs Valley Mills 14-8 and Itasca 33-0. JV is currently 2-2 overall and will be back in action on Thursday at home vs Somerville.

Our middle school programs are off to a great start this season. Our 7th grade is currently 2-0 with wins over Bremond 36-0 and Chilton 28-0. The 8th grade is currently 2-0 with wins over Austin Veritas 34-6 and Chilton 26-8. The middle school will play Somerville at home Thursday with a combined 7th and 8th grade game.

Our coaching staff is looking forward to the rest of district play and continuing to show growth in our programs 7th-12th. We Will Win!

VOLLEYBALL

The Lady Hornets finished up the first round of district play, Thursday, October 1st. The JV team is 3-1 in district play and Varsity is 2-2, with a fun win vs. McDade in McDade recently. The second round for the Lady Hornets begins next Thursday in Bartlett.

The middle school volleyball teams recently played Thorndale at home. All teams fought hard against strong Thorndale teams showing resilience, energy and most importantly teamwork! The middle school season continues Tuesday, October 6th, in McDade.

It has been a great cross country season! Both MS and HS runners have been putting in a lot of work at practice, and are getting better each week! There have been lots of PR's, medalists, and great improvement shown by all who are running! The district meet will be held at Granger Lake on October 12th!

CAFETERIA NEWS

One of our goals in supporting healthy diets and lifestyles at Holland ISD is to help children experience a wide variety of nutritious foods. Vegetables are an important part of a balanced diet, providing our students with essential vitamins, minerals, fiber, and energy to help them grow, learn, and stay active. Fiber helps support healthy digestion and can help children feel full and satisfied, while those vitamins and minerals help support strong bones, healthy skin, the immune system, and overall growth and development.

To ensure they are getting a wider range of beneficial nutrients, we aim to offer a variety of veggies in different colors, textures, and forms each week. This includes leafy greens, starchy vegetables, and colorful red and orange vegetables such as carrots and tomatoes. We also include beans and other legumes, along with familiar favorites that children enjoy....because, of course, we have to include corn!

Offering different types of vegetables regularly gives children opportunities to explore new foods while enjoying the familiar ones they already love. Our goal is to create positive experiences with healthy foods and encourage children to develop a lifelong appreciation for a colorful, balanced diet.

We look forward to continuing to introduce delicious and nutritious choices throughout the year!

HEALTH CLINIC NEWS

Health and Safety Reminders for Fall

As we welcome the fall season, please help us keep our school community healthy by following these important health guidelines:
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds. A helpful way for children to remember is to wash while singing the "Happy Birthday" song twice.
  • Please do not send your child to school if they have a temperature of 100.0°F or higher. Students must be fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication before returning to school.
  • If your child has experienced vomiting or diarrhea, please keep them home. Students must be vomit-free and diarrhea-free for 24 hours without the use of medication before returning to school.
  • Fall allergy season is here. Remember to give allergy medications as directed to help keep symptoms under control.
As Halloween approaches, please remind your children:
  • Never take candy from strangers.
  • Do not eat candy, gummies, or other treats they may find lying around.
  • Always have an adult inspect Halloween treats before eating them.
We are looking forward to cooler fall weather and all the fun activities the season brings. Thank you for partnering with us to keep our students safe, healthy, and ready to learn!

Have a happy, healthy, and safe fall season!
