4th Grade Syllabus, 2018-2019

Welcome to Holland Fourth Grade!! We are glad to have you in our school. Following is some information to help you get acquainted with our classroom routine.

The students will be rotating classrooms this year. Mrs. Doskocil teaches reading, Mrs. Parmer teaches math and Mrs. Jahns teaches language arts. Each teacher teaches her homeroom class science, social studies and AR. This allows for more in-depth teaching of the subject material. Your child's daily schedule is posted below.

Recess

*PLEASE go over the schedule with your child as it is very rigorous and they have to be responsible for taking folders, books, or whatever to every subject. We will let them know what to take to every class on Monday.

Absences

When students return to school after being absent they should expect to take some assignments home to complete or use some recess and/or elective time to make up missed instruction. Please send a written excuse for each absence so the assignments can be made up. There are new state guidelines for absences. Please see handbook.

Discipline

Students are expected to follow classroom and playground rules at all times. Tokens will be taken away when a student's behavior does not meet the teacher's expectations. A token sheet will be sent home. Students who lose three tokens will receive lunch detention and loss of recess for one day. If they lose a fourth token they will have lunch detention and no recess for one week. Those who lose five tokens will continue to have lunch detention, lose recess for the week, will not be able to shop at the Reward Center on Friday, and they will not be allowed to attend the pep rally as well. Once a student loses 6 tokens, then they automatically lose their 6 weeks fieldtrip. The classrooms also have a marble system in place that is used to reward or discipline the homeroom classrooms as a whole. Classes will earn a party depending on when the marble jar is full.

Rewards

Students who have not lost any tokens for 4 of the 6 weeks will be rewarded with admission to the Hornet's Nest at the end of that six weeks period. The Hornet’s Nest is a special lunch served by the teachers and an extended recess.  We hope to see your child at the Hornet’s Nest.  At the end of the year, students that earned 4 out of 6 Hornet’s Nests are invited to the Ice-Cream Social and can bring a guest. Students who have not lost any tokens during the week will receive a coupon for Reward center on Friday worth twenty-five cents. Reward Center will be traveling down the hall every other week. Students also earn “Brag-Tags” for AR and other accomplishments.

UIL Participation: If your student is interested in trying out for the academic UIL teams they must sign up and there are tryouts. There are limited openings on teams. UIL is EXTRA and that will require out of class time coaching and practicing. In the 4th grade the UIL categories are Art Smart, Chess, Music Memory, Number Sense, Oral Reading, Ready Writing and Spelling.

4th Grade Academic Expectations

Math: Students are expected to come to class prepared to learn. They must remember daily to bring their homework and math journal to class. The students will take notes in their math journals which will include vocabulary and example problems. Students will have math fact homework almost every night. The final math grade is determined by Target math 10%, Homework 15%, Daily Work 35%, and Tests 40%.

Language Arts: The Language Arts grade includes writing, spelling, and grammar mechanics. Daily work will include grammar worksheets, projects, and written narrative or expository essays. Tests will include unit tests, quizzes, and complex written essays. Daily grades will be worth 30%, homework will be worth 20%, and test grades will make up the remaining 50% of the student’s final grade. Homework will be sent home in a folder three days a week and due back the next day.  The 3 days will be averaged for one homework grade for the week.

Reading: In fourth grade, reading comprehension, vocabulary and critical thinking are extremely important skills. They will be used in Reading, Writing, Math, Social Studies, and Science. Have your child read each night and then question them, or have them tell you, about what happened in their book. Getting your child to really think about what they are reading helps build a foundation for all other reading skills. The student’s grade is based on daily work 30%, listening/participation 10%, and tests grades 60%. Students will have a reading vocabulary test every Friday. I will send the study guide home the week before, and this is their reading homework. Your child will have a full week to study for the test, AT HOME. If your child does not finish their classwork, they will complete this at home. I will not send any other homework until 6 weeks before the Reading STAAR.  This homework will be a review of skills they must master to pass STAAR.

Accelerated Reading: A.R. is an individualized reading program where students are required to earn a set number of points reading books on their personal reading level each 6 weeks. 45 minutes a day is dedicated to A.R. reading time at school. Students must earn the required number of points on their reading level with at least an 87% correct average to go on the Reward Trip each 6 weeks. Their grade is based on the completion of their set goal and the percent of accuracy on the tests they take on their independent reading level. Students will also work in guided reading groups, and I-Station during this time period. Students need to realize if they wait until the last few weeks to meet their goal for the field trip that it is virtually impossible. Please ask them often what they goal is and how much they have earned. Students are expected to read a .5 point book per night and ready to test over it the next day (just like in 3rd grade).

Science: Students will be graded on the basis of three categories in science. Participation (how well they worked, cooperated, and were involved in the lesson), Daily Work (notes, worksheets, projects, etc.) and Tests. The students are responsible for filling in their own notes together during class. The notes will have the content of what will need to be studied for the tests.

Social Studies:  We will be learning Texas History this year. Students will complete assignments during class. In the Spring, we will make our annual pilgrimage to The Texas State Cemetery and to the Bob Bullock History Museum.

**Students are allowed to correct tests that have grades lower than a 70. The highest grade they can receive for a corrected test is a 70**

4th grade is a BIG change from the lower grades. Please go to the T.E.A. web-site and pull up last year’s STAAR exams, so you can see what your child must know by this spring.

We look forward to working with you and your child!

Mrs. Doskocil, Mrs. Parmer, and Mrs. Jahns
